Just thinking about how Jesus would sit with these people that others avoided…

Like the lepers of their day… Not just inflicted with a physically painful ailment but it being seen as a result of sinfulness and something they can’t come back from… They wore this on their skin and there was no avoiding it… You could see it, visibly, and you wouldn’t need to know anything about them… People didn’t even have to get down to the details before condemning them. They didn’t know what their sins were, only that they were not worth the love and attention Jesus would give.

Or the thieves and prostitutes and even the betraying tax collector… The people who were outwardly sinful… Intentionally taking and hurting others… Those who didn’t even try to hide who they were in their sins… They acted in brokenness, lived in the filth, disregarded the ways of God altogether… People that didn’t care to do right and had to live with the consequences of their actions and all the pain they’d contributed to the lives of others… And still Jesus loves them enough to make them his daily disciples.

But there’s this idea born in Jesus that we can be a truly *new* creation. This belief that God’s love can be so big and so good that we can change completely — no longer who we once were, but someone else entirely.

That’s easy to accept when you weren’t present for the old ways of this person. It’s easy to love the new creation when you’re oblivious to the sins of their past. It’s a signal of proof in the saying, “what you don’t know can’t hurt you…”

But what if you were the victim of their sins? What if you watched those sinful mannerisms for years and never gave a moment of time to the new creation? What if every gory detail was published for all to see? What if the old person was stapled to their forehead and we put them in a worldly box for all to see?

And what about our own secrets? What if every single sin was shed light on? Would you expect the same judgement you give — be it more or less condemning?

Do you really believe in a God who can take a murderous Saul and turn him into a soul-saving, loving Paul? What do you really believe about God and His wild, unending mercy and grace?
