Why do we love even our enemies? Even the ones who hurt us? Even the ones who hurt those we love? Even the bullies who mock and make fun of us? Even the ones we don’t agree with? Even the rapist, murderer, thief? Even the ones who still continue to persecute us? Even the politicians we despise? Even the exes and the ones who disowned us?

There used to be this line spoken at nearly every concert while we were traveling, “It’s easy to love God. He’s perfect. But your neighbor, on the other hand… Not so easy…” And it got a chuckle because we knew it was true to some extent.

This verse in Ecclesiastes always stood out to me:

-----
Don’t eavesdrop on others—you may hear your servant curse you. For you know how often you yourself have cursed others.
Ecclesiastes 7:21‭-‬22 NLT
-----

And upon first reading it, if you take it at face value… You can focus on the servant vs master… You can focus on the words eavesdrop or curse… You might even think it’s more about how people talk about each other in gossip. But when I read it, this is what I see:

—–
Don’t [spend so much energy worried about others] — you may [hear, see, feel] your [neighbor, friend, parent, co-worker, pastor, classmate, anyone]

Curse
Mock or make fun of
Steal from
Lie to
Speak condescending towards
Be rude to
Hurt
Etc.

[You, someone you love, anyone]. But you know how often you yourself have [done SOMETHING to hurt] others.
—–

So… Therefore, love your enemies, because we don’t always deserve it either. If they’re hungry, feed them. If they need help and you CAN help, help them. Don’t withhold love out of spite.

(Also, this is not to suggest become a doormat… Jesus was not a doormat. He spoke with authority and wisdom. So, seek that authority and wisdom whilst living and walking out in love – it’s actually possible.)

This old atheistic point of view came to mind as I was praying through this… I once believed religion and love was a way to control the masses by making people be peaceful wusses or something who didn’t fight authority… But let’s not forget how Daniel defied the king for the sake of his faith… And he survived because God is faithful in return.

So, this walk is not a black and white, easy to understand walk… It’s a walk that takes your time and attention to SEEK GOD so that you can attain wisdom, joy, peace, love and all things HIM in the midst of this chaotic world.

Anyway… Just some things I think about as I attempt to remove the planks from my eyes day by day. ❣️🙏🙌🏽
